She was sitting on the top of a ramp at the skate park near campus, which she visited religiously with her friends, McKenna and Jake. Except Jake hadn't come by the skate park today, which was out of the ordinary for him. Sure, it was a blaring 95 degrees out, but Jake wouldn't miss a skate meet unless there was an emergency; and Lily's concern was growing by the hour. "Seen Jake?" Lily asked McKenna when she sat beside her. McKenna took a swig from her water bottle, catching her breath. "No, but does that really surprise you, Lily?" Lily was caught off guard. "What does that mean?" "He saw you with Nathan, Lily." Nathan was Lily's newest love interest since Jake, and the previous day, she had been locking lips with him at the dining hall. In the past, Jake and Lily have had an undefined flirtation and romantic tenderness towards each other, but neither of them ever made a real move to outwardly talk about their shared attraction. But no way he was jealous, Lily thought. Was he? "Well, how can he be upset we were never together?" Lily asked. "Guess he's not that upset," McKenna said abruptly, looking into the distance. Lily followed McKenna's gaze and was surprised to see Jake walking towards them. Lily was happy to see him, until she noticed he was holding hands with his ex-girlfriend. "Is that---" McKenna started. "It is." Lily said, put off by the reunion. Jake greeted them, apologizing to Lily and Mckenna for not showing up earlier and explained that he and his ex were worked things out in a sudden twist of fate. As Jake bid goodbye to Lily and Mckenna, he turned to Lily with a conflicted expression on his face. "What?" Lily asked, picking up her skateboard. "Nothing. . .nice shoes, Thomas." He said, calling her by her last name. And with that, he jogged off to catch up with his ex-turned-present girlfriend. Lily looked down at her specially-designed Vans that she bought in Brooklyn from Objects New York. She stared at the abstract design, wondering if she was ever really only just friends with Jake. Judging by the knot in her stomach, she guessed not.
