Michael insisted that each wash room had to be decorated with a modern-designed SoapHolder by Objects New York. He was sure to tell his assistant, Tom, that the emerald tile showers and pristine bathtubs required only the most fresh accessory designs for this terrific of a property.
His clients, the Foxes, were very particular on the look and feel they wanted transmitted throughout the home, and Michael promised to deliver.
Yet, much to Michael’s dismay, the SoapHolders were nowhere to be found.
This is the third time he screws up this week, Michael thought to himself.
The first two incidents this week was that Tom forgot to order bedroom and kitchen pieces. He had let those incidents go, without scolding him. But today that would change.
Michael had expected the Foxes in the next five minutes, and so he would have to wait until later to give Tom a stern talking to.
Later that evening, after the close-call with the Foxes, Michael had been settling in at home and remembered Tom’s third error this week. The SoapHolders.
What is going on with that kid lately? He thought, as he dialed Tom’s number.
He took a seat at his home office desk, starring at the inventory log displayed on his desktop. Behind that window screen was a screensaver of himself and his brother at Lake Ontario.
As Michael waited on the other line for Tom, Michael quickly realized that he himself had taken over inventory for this week, not Tom, because Tom was on vacation in Aruba this week. And Michael forgot to click “complete and place orders” at the end of the page.
Before he could gather his thoughts, Tom had answered on the other line.
“Hi Michael, everything going OK at the studio?” Michael knew by the sound of his voice that Tom’s concern was genuine.
He felt a tinge of guilt in his stomach for thinking the worst of him.
“Yes. . .uh, I’m sorry to bother you on your vacation. I just wanted to let you know what a terrific job you’ve been doing lately and that I appreciate your work.”
Michael cleared his throat, adding “There will be a small bonus on your desk when you return next week.”
“Wow! Michael that is so generous of you. Thank you so much.”
“I’m just glad to have you on my team.” Michael said.
After 10 minutes of discussing Aruba’s wonderful attractions, Michael had logged on to a travel site with the appetite for a long vacation. Clearly, he needed one.
