The home entry way was a catastrophe, Emily thought to herself. It had been arranged for her in-laws to come over for supper that evening to celebrate Jacques’ big promotion, and his mother could be particularly critical about untidiness. Of course, as it seemed it was the duty of all mother-in-laws to make their daughter in-law feel inadequate. The last time Jacques’ mother had come over, she complained about there being no place to hang her coat. Emily wanted to come back with a sarcastic comment about how her company wasn’t desired for long anyhow and that there was no need for her to get comfortable. Instead, Emily bit the inside of her cheek and forced a curt smile, promising some sort of coat rack for the future.
The future was now, and Emily had just finished installing several coat pins into the wall. The coat pins were white, knob-like figures that provided seamless organization. Emily liked that It was easy on the eyes, and a far cry from traditional, bulky coat racks that often aged a room.
She sat on the entry way’s small oak bench, where Emily’s four children would usually dump their book bags and jackets on when they came home from school. Emily admired how their belongings looked hung up on the wall, and she found herself reminiscing on the purchase of her ten-year-old son’s fall jacket the previous year.
A knock at the door interrupts her thoughts, and Emily quickly gathers herself to answer the door.
“Norman, Alice, good to see you!” Emily boasts. She notices Alice carrying a bottle of champagne.
“Emily, always a pleasure” Norman says sweetly.
“Emily, hello.” Alice contrasts.
Emily steps aside for them to enter the home, “Come on in.”
They enter the home, Alice setting down the bottle of champagne on the oak bench in the entry way.
“I can take your coat if you’d like,” Emily offers.
Alice looks as if she’s about to make one of her infamous passive aggressive comments or critiques, but then when her eye catches the neatly displayed jackets hung on the wall she looks like she changed her mind.
“It’s nice, the wall pins.” She said blankly, hanging up her luxury peacoat on one of the bare pins.
No backhanded remark? Emily thought, confused.
“Well, let’s open this thing yes?” Alice says, referring to the champagne, quickly changing the subject.
Alice Ford giving a compliment… I’ll drink to that. Emily thought.
“I’ll get the glasses!”
