Peter loved coming to Washington Square Park on the weekends. It gave him time to people-watch and pick at the various wonders in his mind. He’d toy with ideas at random, whatever came to his mind really. Yesterday, Peter wondered what it was exactly about a bird-bath that attracted birds to it. Today, Peter is contemplating why the sunrise and sunset feel so different from each other, even though they’re made up of similar colors. Peter would also come to the park some days with his old friend, Lenny. Peter and Lenny had been friends since the 70s, since their high school days. Unfortunately, Lenny lost his life last year during cardiac surgery, and so Peter doesn’t get to enjoy the laughter and light from Lenny’s company anymore.. but he does get to relive their memories at the park together whenever he visits. Today was a sunny, but cool day. People were dressed in long pants and short sleeve shorts, some even had on sweaters. The changing leaves and cool weather hinted at autumn approaching. A young man sitting at one of the park tables caught his eye. He had a uniquely-designed chess set sitting in front of him, and it seemed like he was practicing, teaching himself to play. The boy could have been no older than sixteen, and Peter was pleasantly surprised that the younger generation still took an interest in board games, especially one as challenging as Chess. Peter walked over to the chess-playing boy. Are you just learning, son? He asked. The boy looked up, nodding. He seemed shy and reserved. He reminded Peter of his grandson, Jack, except Jack was more into his video game gadgets. He doesn’t see too much of him anymore since his daughter moved to Maine. “Mind if I give you some pointers?” “Sure.” The boy said, and Peter happily sat across from him and picked up one of the pieces, admiring its fancy, eye-catching design. “I’m Leonardo.” The boy said. Peter was taken back by the familiarness to Lenny’s name, his heart warmed at the comforting sound. “Peter. It’s good to meet you, son.” “Is it Ok if I call you Lenny?” “Yeah, Lenny’s alright.” The air instantly filled with nostalgia. Peter had to clear his throat and take a breath, as tears threatened to surface at the thought of his late friend. “Say, these pieces are really neat.” Peter said. “Thanks. My dad got them for me online from a place called Objects New York. The pieces are like, made special so that they’re good for the environment and last a long time.” “I think that’s just fantastic.” Peter said, impressed with the boy’s concern for the environment. “You know, Lenny, things like this help the world stick around a lot longer. You and your dad seem to have the right idea.” “At your age, it’s important to appreciate what you’ve got while you have it.” Petter added. “I do my best,” Leonardo said. Peter offered a gentle smile, and said “So. Let’s play some chess, yeah?” Best of Design on FANCY Made in Brooklyn
