James walked into psychic Sue’s home office ready to get the fortune reading over with. He personally hadn’t believed in psychics and their abilities, but his fiance, Georgia, had been asking him to pay psychic Sue a visit for over a week now and because he wanted to please her, he agreed. He had been in the midst of transitioning careers, and Georgia said Sue could let him know if it would all work out. Whatever that means. As he entered the room, James noticed that her home office hadn’t looked the way he imagined. Psychic Sue had tall, grand windows that allowed the summer sun to completely illuminate the room, and shiny hardwood floors that made James almost reconsider his own home floor tiling. The furniture was dark and sophisticated; with a leather sofa serving as the main seating as well two black contemporary style chairs that each stood on four legs. If it weren’t for the bowl of colorful gems at the center of the table, and strong smell of sandalwood in the air (likely from the burning incense) James wouldn’t have known known this place harbored a psychic. He took a seat on one of the black chairs and waited, wondering if he would land the financial analyst position he was interviewed for the previous day and if he could have made a better impression or at least worn better shoes. After a few moments, Psychic Sue emerged from a back room with a deck of cards in her hand. She was middle aged, had long dark hair and intense round eyes. “Hi. You must be James,” psychic Sue said, extending her hand. “Yes. Uh, my fiancé called to arrange this.” James said, wiping his sweaty palms on his jeans before shaking her hand. “Your skeptical,” psychic Sue said, knowingly. “That’s alright. Many people are their first time. Come this way, and we can get started.” James followed Sue into the back room, and they sat across from each other in the same black chairs that were also in the living room. On the table in front of them was some more burning incense, accompanied by white lit candles. Psychic Sue asked James to shuffle the card deck seven times and that while doing so, he should concentrate on what he wanted to know. As he shuffled the decorated tarot cards, he decided to give this his full effort and thought about where he and his wife would be in the future. Would they be more financially stable? Would their marriage succeed? Was there anything he needed to know? With focused eyes, psychic Sue laid out the shuffled deck and studied them for a few moments. James watched her face intently, wondering if she actually received messages from the cards or used this time to stall and conjure up a story. “You’re going to receive two forms of good news.” She said, eyes still fixated on the spread. “One of them is about money. . .uh, finances, it seems. The other Is something unexpected. Unexpected—but positive. It will bring much happiness into your life.” Over the course of the next few days, James would understand that not all psychics were phony and out to scam people. Some people just had a sixth sense, apparently, as James found psychic Sue’s reading to be astoundingly accurate. In the two weeks after his visit, had received a job offer as an executive assistant at a tech company and learned that Georgia was two months pregnant with his first child. From then on, he became a regular customer at psychic Sue’s.
